We work with the data collected by the electronic nose. This device \u201csmells\u201d the patient\u2019s exhaled air: sensors convert the compounds in that air into measurement signals. Our work consists of four parts.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Ensuring data is secure and findable.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ALCOVE is supported by the European Commission, so our research data must adhere to the FAIR principles: it must be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. Together with our project partners ULi\u00e8ge and CHU Lille, we are documenting these agreements\u2014as well as the protection of personal data\u2014in a Data Management Plan. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Learning to interpret measurement signals.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our colleagues at CRIStAL (Universit\u00e9 de Lille) are developing new methods for explainable AI: software that not only provides a result but also shows what that result is based on. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Understanding the sensors<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers at ULi\u00e8ge \u2013 Arlon Campus are carefully mapping the sensors they developed in Work Package 4. This allows us to identify which characteristics of a sensor signal are truly meaningful, and to build the appropriate computational methods for signal processing based on those characteristics. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Integrating everything into the device<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, we\u2019re embedding those computational methods into the electronic nose itself. This requires a balance between accuracy and computational power: the device must deliver reliable results while operating quickly enough on limited hardware. This also includes a user-friendly interface, so that healthcare providers can use the device intuitively.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>What are the main challenges your work package is currently facing, and what progress has been achieved so far?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have already reached several important milestones. A first draft of the Data Management Plan is now available: it outlines how the partners will share their data with one another in a standardized and secure manner. Our colleagues at CRIStAL (Universit\u00e9 de Lille) developed a new AI algorithm that can distinguish between clinical pictures and explain how it arrives at that conclusion. It performs just as well as existing algorithms but operates using very simple rules\u2014which makes the results easier to verify. Researchers at ULi\u00e8ge succeeded in reading and characterizing the sensors, allowing KU Leuven to now incorporate them into an integrated prototype. Initial sketches and versions of the user interface are now available.<br\/>The biggest challenge is reliability. Doctors must be able to trust that the device will not provide a false diagnosis or suddenly malfunction. In addition, various research institutions are collaborating on a single device, which requires clear agreements regarding intellectual property; we are formalizing these in non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). And the user interface will be further refined once the user studies are completed.          <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>How does your work package contribute to the overall ambition and expected impact of the ALCOVE project?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our work package is the final link in the chain designed to help lung cancer early detection: what the other work packages are developing\u2014the sensors and the measurements\u2014comes together in a single functioning device. Robust AI algorithms and a deep understanding of the sensors make the analysis more accurate. Correct and safe operation ensures that doctors and patients can trust the results.
